Cytogenetics is the study of heredity and variation by the methods of both cytology and genetics. Cytogenetics allows for the detection of large DNA changes visible on G-banded chromosomes. These genetic changes can be balanced or unbalanced abnormalities and include numerical and structural aberrations. Cytogenetics continues to be the method of choice for facilitating diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options for many types of hematopoietic neoplasms and constitutional disorders.
